The Johnson City Schools Board of Education voted to adopt a new scheduling rule for high school graduation ceremonies, establishing that, beginning with the Class of 2027, ceremonies will be held on the first Saturday after seniors complete their final day of classes.
Board members emphasized that the change will not alter the previously published graduation date for the Class of 2026. The board took the action after administrators and PTA representatives presented survey results and other input showing interest in moving the ceremony later in the spring; staff said a family survey conducted in connection with Science Hill High School's inquiry showed a majority in favor of a later date but that responses may include non-senior families.
During discussion, several trustees said it was too late to change the 2026 date because many families already had travel and lodging plans. Other trustees and student representatives supported a later date for future classes to reduce the gap between seniors' last instructional day and commencement.
The motion to adopt the scheduling change for 2027 and beyond passed by roll call with all members present voting yes. The roll call recorded votes from Cecilia Martin, Dr. Ginger Carter, Kathy Hall, Tom Hager, Rick Smith, Paula Treece and Jonathan Kenneth in favor.
District administration said it will notify families, high school administrators and community partners about the policy change well in advance, and that the calendar committee will use the policy when developing future school-year calendars.
The board did not adopt any change to the 2026 graduation date at the meeting, and administrators said they would continue coordination with schools and teams (for example, athletics) affected by calendar changes.
