The Fort Pierce City Commission voted Nov. 3 to approve a blanket purchase order not to exceed $145,000 for golf-course fertilizers.
Commissioner Gaines pulled the item from the consent agenda to ask for detail on the “blanket purchase order” wording and vendor selection. Golf course staff explained the purchase covers several product lines required for sandy soils at the municipal course, including Ronstar (a pre‑emergent that staff said is formulated for sandy soil), liquid fertilizers used through a fertigation system, and a granular product that combines fertilizer, nematicide and insecticide. Staff said Helena Chemical previously carried some products but no longer stocks required items, leaving Legacy Turf (based in Jupiter) as the local supplier able to deliver the specific products the course must use.
The superintendent described past problems with under‑fertilizing, insect pressure and weeds, and said the course’s revenues have improved; commissioners noted golfers’ expectations for course condition. Commissioners also raised environmental safeguards; staff said much of the product mix is organic and that best practices are used to protect the nearby lagoon. The motion to approve the expenditure passed by roll call.
