District administrators presented a vendor quote for open-gate metal detectors and related equipment and training during Mondayvening
iscussion, and the board agreed to seek competing quotes and further detail before any purchase.
An administrator told the board they had received a detailed quote that included equipment, training and installation and estimated the per-unit price at about $20,000. The administrator said the district would likely need two units per building (eight total) and that the vendor had flagged throughput concerns for the middle school, which has roughly 900 students. "They said to get 900 kids through two entrances would be a lot, if our goal was to get kids in within, like, a 15 minute window," the administrator said.
Board members asked about what items on the vendor list were necessary, whether the district could install most units after one professional installation and whether replacement batteries and accessories were needed. The administration said some handheld wands could be used in the interim but warned hand wands take more time. Board members also discussed possible grant funding tiers for school safety equipment and noted the state budget impasse may affect timing and grant availability.
The board directed staff to obtain additional quotes and to refine the current vendor proposal to remove unneeded items and identify installation costs. Staff said they will bring a revised quote and research grant-tier requirements for discussion at the December meeting. No contract or purchase was approved at Mondayvening's meeting.
