Sharon Vergrand of 207 Carol Lane addressed the Elyria City Council during public comment on Nov. 3, urging the city not to remove the traffic signal at Oberlin Road and West Avenue and citing pedestrian safety and frequent event traffic near the stadium.

Vergrand described nearby uses she said increase pedestrian crossings — an apartment building, a corner store and the library — and noted children who use the crossing. She said removing the signal would affect both vehicle and pedestrian traffic during events such as graduations, track meets and football games.

Council recommended Vergrand meet with the safety-service director and city engineer to review the proposal and safety precautions. The safety-service director and engineer were asked to include Councilmember Armstrong in follow-up conversations and to coordinate a meeting so Vergrand can present specific concerns to staff.

No formal vote was taken; the council treated the matter as public comment and recommended staff-level follow-up and a meeting to review engineering and safety options.
