At the Nov. 4 meeting the City Commission approved several community donations and special-event allocations.

The commission approved a $10,000 donation to the Community of Performing Arts Foundation, a group that supports the local Nicaraguan community. A motion to approve was moved by Commissioner Rey and seconded by Commissioner Yano; the item passed on a voice vote.

The commission also authorized up to $10,000 to purchase two tables for a SOUTHCOM-hosted U.S. Marine Corps ball at which Mayor Diaz will serve as guest speaker and guest of honor for the 250th anniversary event. The commission approved that donation by motion and voice vote.

A commissioner requested adding a pocket item to donate $5,000 to the Miami Diaper Bank. The commission voted to add the pocket item and then approved the $5,000 expenditure. The motion to approve the $5,000 donation was moved by Commissioner Reynaldo Rey and seconded by Commissioner Yaciel; the item passed.

Separately, commissioners approved reallocating $5,000 from the commissioners' special events budget to the mayor's purview for a holiday event at Jorge Macanosa Senior Center for elderly residents. Motion to add and approve the $5,000 allocation passed; the motion on record included Commissioner Ian Vazil as mover and Commissioner Reynaldo Rey as second.
