The Newington Board of Education on Oct. 29 recognized multiple school employees for emergency response, mental-health support and facilities work.

At the start of the meeting the board presented Everyday Heroes awards to members of a newly created Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT) at Newington High School after a significant student medical emergency. Dr. Premitt said the MERT "assisted or helped to respond to a significant student medical event," and read the names and positions of those honored, including Taylor Rich, laboratory monitor; Kerwin Garcia, laboratory monitor; Oscar Rivera, visiting security guard; school nurse Callie Lawrence; security staff Tim Kasik, Lauren Rondonone and Norberto Mendez; and district maintainer Merrick Garwin. Mercy Hetherington was identified in remarks as directing the new team.

Board members praised the quick action. "I'm so very proud we have the MERT team in place," said Board member Sean Holleran, adding that extensive training and practice were evident when staff responded. Several members described the group's work as an example of the district's community commitment to student safety.

The board then read a resolution designating Oct. 29, 2025, as Newington School Psychologist Appreciation Day. A district representative on the line told the board that many school psychologists have long tenures with the districtseveral with 17 years or moreand highlighted efforts to expand bilingual evaluation capacity. Board members noted the psychologists' role in safeguarding students' mental health and thanked them for working with families and school staff.

The board also proclaimed Oct. 29 as Custodian and Maintenance Workers Day and invited custodial and maintenance staff to the dais. Facilities staff described typical shifts that begin before dawn and continue into the evening and explained responsibilities including HVAC, doors and hardware, cleaning and event support. "They're the first in the building and the last out," a facilities speaker said, noting that much of the work occurs overnight. Board members and administrators thanked custodians and maintainers for both the physical upkeep and the day-to-day emotional support they provide students.

The recognitions were presented as part of the meeting's opening agenda and included brief remarks, a photo opportunity and expressions of appreciation from board members.
