Mayor Jim Dodge said the Village of Orland Park has moved to 12-hour shifts for police officers and that the schedule is arranged over a two-week period.

Dodge said the structure intends to avoid three to four consecutive 12-hour workdays by scheduling officers to work two 12-hour days, then have time off, then work additional 12-hour days within the two-week cycle. "So the intended schedule will be work 2 days at 12 hours, have time time off, work a few more days with 12 hour shifts," Dodge said, adding the cycle "balances out, so they will not be working 3 to 4 days in a row of 12 hour shifts."

The mayor said the change aims to give officers more predictable days off and "a much higher quality of life," including more weekends and family time. He also said the change was supported by the Metropolitan Area Police Union, which "advocated for this for years and overwhelmingly supported this change to the contract." Dodge said the shift structure also supports the village's expansion of the police department by putting more officers "on the street at any given shift."
