Mayor Steven L. Reed said Montgomery recently opened a new community center on Calmar Drive and described a slate of holiday and veterans events the city will host. "We just cut the ribbon on a brand new community center ... Right out there at Calmar Drive," Reed told host Daryl Hall.
Reed said the center is a new neighborhood facility and recounted a resident's request for improved amenities: a church member joked the new kitchen needs a larger microwave. Reed relayed the anecdote as an example of how residents focus on practical needs at local facilities and said the city would follow up: "Yes, ma'am. We're gonna get a microwave today."
The mayor also previewed Thanksgiving traditions and Veterans Day programming. He reminded listeners of Montgomery's long-standing Turkey Day Classic and the Turkey Day parade, and said the city will host several holiday activities and give-back campaigns aimed at helping families in need during the season. "The city has a number of activities for our military veterans coming up with the Veterans Day parade," Reed said.
Reed estimated the new community center's size at about 5,000 square feet and emphasized the center's role as a hub for neighborhood events and basic-assistance distribution during the holidays. He framed the season as a time for coordinated charitable work to help people who may be struggling amid wider economic uncertainty.
