The Weston County School Board voted to approve the district's first-quarter financial report after staff told members the budget is tracking close to expectations but that declining enrollment is the district's main concern.
"Looking at trend basis, we are about where we normally are within the budget. I don't think there's any cause for concern or despair," a district staff member said while presenting the report. The presenter added that the bigger issue is "the drop in enrollment, which will later start showing up probably more next year's budget."
Board members emphasized that services to students would not change immediately. The presenter noted concerns related to federal meal program participation and said, "we're going to continue to take care of kids. There won't be a difference in services or treatment, regardless of what happens at the federal level."
After brief discussion, a motion to approve the first-quarter financial report was moved and seconded; the board recorded the vote as "aye" and the motion carried. Board member Jake seconded the motion on the record.
The presentation did not include specific projections of enrollment losses by school or a dollar estimate of the impact on next year's budget; staff said they would monitor trends and return with updates as numbers become clearer.
