The Land Use and Transportation Committee voted to forward a planning-code ordinance designating the Mint Mall and Hall (951'957 Mission Street) in SoMa as a city landmark with a positive committee recommendation.
Supervisor Matt Dorsey, who joined the hearing, described the Mint Mall as a long-standing community hub for San Francisco's Filipino community and noted the landmark nomination was initiated by that community. Planning staff and community authors described the building as a mixed-use structure with ground-floor retail that has housed Filipino businesses and services since at least the 1980s and residential units above that historically provided an entry point for new arrivals.
The Planning Department noted this designation is part of an equity-focused effort and that the designation report will include translations in Tagalog, a first in the city's landmark reports, and that an appendix of participant images will be added to the administrative record. The Historic Preservation Commission recommended adoption despite acknowledging historic preservation concerns tied to the site's redevelopment potential; the Planning Department described mitigation conditions including archival documentation, a materials salvage plan, and an interpretive plan to explain the site's history in a public location.
A long-term resident and tenant of 957 Mission Street told the committee the building has been the speaker's first home in San Francisco and recounted the strong sense of community and continuity among residents and businesses. Supervisor Melgar asked that her name be added as a cosponsor; the committee voted to recommend the ordinance as a committee report with three ayes. The item will appear on the Board of Supervisors agenda for further action.
