Dr. Denny, the district curriculum director, presented the Harris County School District’s annual SAT participation and outcomes on Oct. 2, noting the district’s state ranking and how students’ reported career interests align with local course offerings.
Denny told the board that "every October, we do get the previous graduating class SAT participation and scores" and pointed members to the packet comparing Harris County to neighboring districts and to individual schools. The presentation, she said, shows the district tied for 13th in the state and one school tied for 53rd in the state.
The report included historical context on state and university testing requirements. Denny summarized recent years of waivers and explained that several institutions required the SAT in 2024 and 2025, and that in the coming year seven additional colleges in Georgia plan to require a college entrance exam. She warned that expanded institutional requirements are "probably" going to affect next year’s participation numbers.
Board members and Denny also reviewed a section of the report showing where students request that SAT scores be sent — an indicator of college destinations — and a career-interest summary. Denny said the career-preference data "align very beautifully with the courses that we offer at Harris County High School," and pointed to construction and other career-technical programs as examples where course offerings meet student interest.
The presentation did not include proposals for board action; it was delivered as an informational update and the superintendent and curriculum staff invited questions. No formal votes related to curriculum items were taken at the meeting.
Board members thanked staff for the report and asked only clarifying questions about participation and program alignment. The district will continue to monitor how changing college requirements affect participation and report back in future updates.
The board did not take action on these data at the Oct. 2 session; the materials were presented for review and will inform future planning and reporting.
