Board leadership told the Farmington Public Schools Board of Education on Sept. 30 that a pending state budget presents risks to the district’s universal free breakfast and lunch and to Head Start funding, and that the district will notify families if changes become necessary.
President Weems summarized federal and state funding uncertainty and said some Head Start programs nationally lost funding earlier in the year; she said the district is “considering options” and will make decisions for the 2026–27 school year if funding changes. She reminded the public that state statutory or program requirements impose notice periods: any change to free meals requires a 30‑day notice and the district will continue to provide meals for that window if funding is removed.
Superintendent Dr. Coffin reiterated the message: the universal free breakfast and lunch program is running now but is contingent on final state budget appropriations. He said the district is modeling scenarios, will notify families promptly of any change, and that the board packet includes correspondence and materials about Head Start.
On the consent agenda, the board approved routine items that included the Head Start director’s monthly report and a note that the Head Start program “must submit a non‑competing continuation application in order to receive funding starting in January.” The board approved the consent agenda by voice vote; the consent motion passed.
Trustees said they want prompt communication to families should funding change and emphasized preparing for multiple budget outcomes.
