The Lago Vista Building Standards Commission spent part of its work session reviewing the city code’s definitions and whether the same terms should be defined once in a single, city‑wide section.
Commissioners said the current code contains chapter‑level definitions that sometimes use different phrasing. “If you change one of them, you’ve gotta go through and change all of them,” one commissioner warned, describing inconsistencies that can create confusion for staff and applicants.
Several commissioners said a single appendix or “universal” definitions list could reduce duplication. “All you need is one sentence at the beginning or near beginning of each part of the code stating that the definitions that apply across all the sections are in appendix A,” a commissioner said. Others cautioned that a universal list could become unwieldy or reduce the ability to tailor definitions for specialized chapters such as floodplain or subdivision rules.
Staff and commissioners agreed that consultants working on the city’s code diagnostic (identified in the meeting as Priest and Nichols) should provide templates and examples from other jurisdictions to guide drafting. The commission did not vote or adopt a course of action; members asked staff and the consultant to return with draft language and examples so the commission can consider a clearer approach at a future meeting.
Ending
No formal change was made; the commission will await consultant recommendations and a draft approach that either inserts universal definitions in an appendix or harmonizes chapter‑level definitions. Staff said the consultant’s code diagnostic will include public meetings and is scheduled to return recommendations to the city no later than February.
