The City Council reviewed its approved legislative priorities and discussed whether to keep them unchanged before forwarding them to the Space Coast League of Cities and, ultimately, the Florida League of Cities.
City Manager Britney said she provided the council with the previously approved priorities and asked for a consensus to either keep them or propose edits. Council members highlighted the Indian River Lagoon cleanup as a top priority, saying the lagoon’s geographic reach and local canal conditions make state funding important. One council member noted, "the lagoon's number one for me," and urged prioritizing it in discussions with state representatives.
Council members also raised concerns about cybersecurity: while they agreed the city needs robust cybersecurity, several members warned against state mandates without corresponding funding. One council member said the city has spent substantially on cybersecurity in recent years and cautioned that unfunded mandates would pose financial strain on smaller cities.
Other items mentioned as regional priorities included short‑term rental regulation shifts from state to local control and PFAS legislation. City Manager Britney said she would convey the council’s input to the Space Coast League of Cities and report back on the regional prioritization before submission to the Florida League of Cities.
