The North Pike School District Board of Trustees on an evening agenda voted to approve the district's final amended closeout budget for fiscal 2024–25, to forego purchasing land parcels adjacent to North Pike Junior High School for now, and to adopt a resolution opposing state school choice legislation.
The board opened the item on the 2024'25 closeout budget with a motion to approve the final amended budget, which received a second and carried on an oral "Aye" vote. The superintendent described the measure as the "final amended budget" for the closeout period and said signatures would be collected that night for submission to the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE).
On a separate motion, the board accepted the superintendent's recommendation to stop pursuing purchase of the parcels adjacent to or across from North Pike Junior High School. The superintendent said the board had discussed the matter previously in an executive session and planned to send a letter to the homeowners explaining that the district might revisit the property if deed issues were resolved.
The board also approved a board-sponsored resolution opposing proposed school choice legislation. A draft resolution presented at the request of a trustee described school choice as a mechanism that would redistribute public dollars to students attending private or charter schools and said the districts adopting the resolution oppose programs "that undermine public education." Trustees discussed circulating the resolution to county and municipal bodies and the superintendent said the city of Pearl and several other local boards had adopted similar measures.
After the votes, the board amended the agenda and moved into executive session to discuss student-residency matters; a motion to close open session and go into executive session was made and seconded and carried by voice vote.
All motions recorded in the meeting were made and adopted by voice votes; no roll-call vote tallies with member names were recorded in the transcript.
