St. Louis Public Schools’ legislative committee confirmed plans for a district PAC advocacy day on Feb. 24, with organizers aiming to have a recruitment flyer ready by Nov. 1 and the Rotunda space booked for the event.
The committee discussed using the event as an educational field trip for students in government and civic-engagement classes. Tracy (district staff) said the district expects to recruit parents and students, and that organizers will prepare a one-page flyer and student-facing talking points so classes can be briefed in advance. Tracy said the district will treat student participation as an educational field trip, which will not count as an absence for participating students.
Committee members discussed transportation and logistics. Staff said buses could be arranged when schools register the day as a field trip; Tracy and Gloria said the district will provide a flyer and talking points tailored for students. Gloria confirmed the Rotunda has been booked this year so the event will be indoors.
Several board members said previous visits elicited positive reactions from legislators and that student voices help explain local classroom issues directly to policymakers. The committee encouraged cross-curricular framing so the advocacy day could tie into language arts, science or other classes as appropriate.
Ending: Staff will produce the one-page student flyer and broader event flyer; organizers expect to circulate the materials in advance and begin recruiting students and families after Nov. 1.
