Planning staff and the Planning Commission discussed preparations for a joint work session with the mayor and commission to review the proposed future land‑use map and related materials. Staff said the session is scheduled to begin at noon on Oct. 14 and run until 5 p.m., but the order and exact agenda items had not been finalized. Commissioners and staff discussed the session format, expectations about public input, and how to present the map and supporting materials so elected officials understand the process and evidence behind the map.
Staff said the future land‑use map was developed through a multi‑year process involving a steering committee, community input and technical analysis; the work session is intended to present "who, what, why and how" to the mayor and commission and answer their questions. Commissioners noted that the map has already generated political interest and asked staff to be prepared to explain that the map is not "in stone": the code provides an established, public process for amending the future land‑use map as circumstances or evidence warrant.
Staff also said there will be at least two more public hearings on the future land‑use map after the work session; commissioners discussed the need to make materials clear and to be able to explain how public input was collected and synthesized. The discussion covered potential pain points (density, parking and where mixed‑use should be encouraged) and how to present tradeoffs to elected officials.
Staff said more details about the work session agenda will be shared when confirmed and invited commissioners to provide questions and priorities to help structure the presentation.
