Houston ISD staff presented progress updates on Goal 3, measure 3.2 — the district’s metric for students on track to complete career and technical education (CTE) pathways — reporting year-over-year gains and plans to expand sequencing and industry-aligned credentials.
Staff said the district exceeded the year’s target for students on track to achieve CTE completer status, reporting 51% at the end of 2024–25 and a beginning-of-year figure of 41% for the current year. Officials described several measures to sustain growth: standardizing course sequences, expanding dual-credit options, investment in upgraded equipment at career centers and closer scheduling coordination so students can complete coherent course sequences.
A staff presenter told the board that the total volume of students in grades 10–12 was “almost 40,000” in 2022–23, with 13,000 students on track that year. By 2024–25, the on-track total had risen to about 18,746 — a net increase of roughly 5,500 students, the presenter said. The district emphasized high-wage, high-demand programs such as networking, distribution and logistics, entrepreneurship and health-related pathways.
Board members asked about early exposure in middle school and how the district supports students who arrive late to HISD; staff said the district is expanding middle-school exposure to CTE and building pathways so students entering at different points can continue their sequences.
Ending: Staff said the district would continue scheduling improvements, program-of-study standardization and investments in equipment and work-based learning. Trustees voted to accept the monitoring update in a separate motion later in the meeting.
