Matt McDermott, of Hohner Architects, gave the Warren County R-III Board of Education an on-site construction update for the new Daniel Boone Elementary, saying the project is progressing and remains ahead of schedule.
McDermott described completed and in-progress work at the site, including grading and seeding plans for a detention pond, poured concrete in the front drive lane and parking, steel erection and metal deck installation on classroom wings, and plumbing and subgrade work in restroom and cafeteria areas. "They're moving very well in that classroom wing," McDermott said of construction in the south wing.
The presentation detailed specific elements the board asked to track: a generator enclosure adjacent to the storm shelter, precast double-T storm-shelter walls, and rooftop mechanical screening behind a mansard-like perimeter. McDermott said the contractor plans to start placing EPDM roofing and rigid insulation on the south classroom wing "next week"; once that roof work is finished the building will be weather-tight and interior trades can expand work.
McDermott gave a near-term schedule and finish targets the project team is tracking. Contractual dates listed in the presentation call for substantial completion in November and final completion in December; McDermott told the board the contractor is currently working on a schedule that could move some completion activities into July–August of the following year. He added the team expects to complete most slab pours by the first week of November, weather permitting.
Board members asked whether supply lead times have been a problem. McDermott said contractors and the design team have been proactive and, "as of today, we have not seen issues with material" availability. He also described planned work to cut a new curb off the city Rock Road entrance so construction traffic will use concrete parking and reduce mud on nearby streets.
During new business later in the meeting, the board approved an alternate change order to add six classrooms to the project; the board discussed that recent MoDOT cost-share funds made that addition feasible.
The presentation included multiple exterior and interior photos showing classroom framing, duct rough-in, and the stage/multipurpose area. McDermott credited the on-site superintendent and crew by name and invited board questions before concluding the item.
Board action related to the project — a change order and authority for the superintendent to sign a cost-share agreement with MoDOT — appears in the meeting's votes at a glance.
