Several Hanover Park residents told the Village Board on Oct. 2 that recent street parking restrictions are causing hardship for neighbors, particularly people with limited mobility.
A resident identified in the meeting as Mark told trustees he recently had both knees replaced and that changes to on-street parking left him unable to find a spot near his home. "I ended up getting a parking ticket the night before my surgery," Mark said, describing repeated overnight moves and limited access to curbside parking on his block, Nugget Circle. Another resident, identified as a neighbor and by the meeting moderator as Miss Collins, said the current restrictions are "a nightmare" and that multiple households have two or three cars and no longer have adequate street parking.
Residents requested options such as alternating-night parking and exemptions for residents with mobility limitations. Mayor Rodney S. Craig told the crowd he has reached out to Commonwealth Edison about a vacant parcel behind the neighborhood that the village might be able to lease or otherwise arrange for overflow parking; he described talks with ComEd real-estate staff as a "work in progress." Craig also said the police chief would meet with individual residents after the meeting to discuss handicapped or individual circumstances.
A resident noted the village posted a map of the parking restrictions on Facebook but said not all neighbors received mailed notice. Trustees and staff invited residents to meet with the police chief outside the council chambers to review individual cases; the board did not change or vote on policy during the meeting.
The board said staff will continue to study options and discuss possible remedies, including outreach about the posted map and follow-up with ComEd on potential off-street parking opportunities.
