Parowan — At its Oct. 9 meeting the Parowan City Council received a series of reports and community updates from council members and staff, covering ribbon cuttings, event schedules, infrastructure projects and emergency preparedness.

Community events and ribbon cuttings
Council members highlighted recent and upcoming community activities: the Parowan field-house ribbon cutting (new facility at the high school), the ACE Hardware opening, the Parowan Elementary walk-and-roll event, an ongoing Parowan Community Theater production, and a Firehouse Family Festival scheduled for Oct. 13 from 6–8 p.m. Council members asked staff to publicize events and encouraged community participation.

Old Rock Church roof and Old Rock Church Days
Staff and contractors reported a plan to perform roof repairs on the historic Old Rock Church the week of Oct. 20. Staff said work will be phased and that contractors sought to minimize the time the building is exposed; tarping and short, controlled removal steps will be used. Separately, volunteers discussed the possibility of combining Old Rock Church Days with Pioneer Day celebrations in future planning; organizers continue to refine plans and scheduling.

Main Street / bridal-area project and airport matters
Staff announced the Main Street Bridal project (Main Street / Bridal area) will be advertised for bid on Oct. 18; the council will invite public review of the final design at an upcoming meeting. Staff also reported the airport FBO (fixed-base operator) contract process continues; council asked staff to complete background checks on remaining proposers before award negotiations.

Emergency readiness and sandbags
Public works and emergency management updates: staff said the city has sandbags and staging plans and will coordinate with county emergency managers if heavy rains cause localized flooding. NOAA forecast information cited in the meeting indicated a potential heavy-rain window late the next night into Saturday; staff said they would mobilize sandbag resources if needed.

Economic-development and grant activity
Staff reported progress on an EDA grant application related to airport road and airport infrastructure; the city also pursued state-level match funding opportunities. Staff expects to return with additional grant and match information as applications progress.

Other notes
Council members expressed ongoing interest in assisted-living options for Parowan and said they will pursue information on local opportunities. Staff also reminded council that the city will present final design materials for Main Street / Bridal and encouraged public review when the project goes to bid.
