Bailey Elementary students and staff recognized third-grader Brooks Seasonfits at the school's weekly Ram Rally for his actions during a family camping incident in Montrose, Colorado, on Aug. 29, an unidentified staff member said.
The staff member said Seasonfits “acted with clarity, strength, and heart” after what the speaker described as a tragedy during “a 50-year family camping tradition” in Montrose. “Brooks, your actions remind us what it truly means to lead the purpose. You are the definition of being your best, and you are truly a game changer,” the staff member said.
An unidentified commenter who spoke at the assembly described the scene and Seasonfits's role in helping others. “He was calming me down when I was not calm. I was trying to stay calm for him, but it was hard. My parents were pretty injured, and he just told me some ways to stay calm and help me breathe,” the commenter said. The staff member said first responders on scene — including Seasonfits’s cousin, identified as a Stillwater firefighter — recognized his actions.
School staff told teachers and colleagues the account matched what they know of Seasonfits, and the staff member said teachers at Bailey Elementary were proud. No policy actions, disciplinary matters, or formal investigations were described during the assembly.
The recognition took place at Ram Rally, a regular Friday assembly at Bailey Elementary. School staff framed the event as honoring a student whose actions helped others during a family emergency; the remarks at the assembly focused on praise and community gratitude.
