Cheryl Ehlers, representing the Carlsbad Oceanside Art League, told the Arts Commission Oct. 2 that the nonprofit has expanded monthly demonstration classes, added youth programming and increased community outreach supported by the commission’s community arts grant.
Ehlers said the League’s free, instructor‑led demonstrative classes meet monthly at the Pine Avenue Community Center, hold up to 50 participants per session and run about 1:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. Supplies are provided. The League used recent grant funding to add 15 classes across adults and children and reported steady increases in attendance and community interest. Ehlers said the League conducts surveys and sign‑in sheets to track participation and that about 90% of attendees are from Carlsbad, with others from nearby San Diego and Oceanside.
The League also described a youth‑focused “Inspire” exhibit program that features student art professionally hung in the gallery for 30 days with receptions and awards; Ehlers said one recent Inspire event drew about 350 families. The League said it operates as a nonprofit gallery in the plaza for 26 years, relies on volunteer members (about 150), and coordinates committees that support programming and exhibitions.
Commissioners asked about registration and how community members can find events; Ehlers said the League’s schedule and RSVP link are maintained at northcoastalartgallery.com. Commissioners thanked the League for its outreach and for program growth; no formal action was required or taken on this item.
