City of West Allis Public Works staff on a meeting summarized the department's response to the Aug. 9, 2025 flood event, credited crews and contractors, and described next steps for federal reimbursement.
Director of Public Works Dave Webking said city crews, sanitation staff and multiple contractors responded to the flood, and he commended employees for continuing response work even when personally affected. Webking listed contractors and partners who provided services during cleanup, including Anderson Landscape and Maintenance, Fisher Trucking, Waste Management and other vendors that supplied containers, trucks and hauling capacity when the municipal drop-off site was unavailable.
Webking said contracting services for flood response totaled about $220,000 for hauling, rented containers and other third-party services. Staff redirected some loads away from the normal drop-off site to alternate landfills because of flood impacts to the regular site, which increased mileage and time.
On federal assistance, Webking said city staff have met one-on-one with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) staff to present public-sector damages and that FEMA's process is addressing individual claims first and will move to public-sector requests. Webking said FEMA asked to meet with West Allis and neighboring jurisdictions (Wauwatosa and Milwaukee) because the city's damages were comparatively higher. He said the city expects resolution "sometime soon" but noted that final FEMA awards are not guaranteed.
Staff credited the AssetWorks work-order system for helping document labor, equipment and material costs during the response; Webking said the system has staff entries ready for FEMA reporting.
The council asked whether FEMA funding had been received; Webking said no public-sector FEMA payments had been issued yet. No formal action or vote on recovery expenditures was taken at the meeting; staff said they are compiling documentation to support FEMA public-sector claims.
