The Sunnyvale Human Relations Commission approved a draft work plan for 2026 with several amendments at its Oct. 9 meeting.
The commission voted to swap the Leadership Sunnyvale presentation with a NovaWorks presentation (placing Leadership Sunnyvale in July and NovaWorks in October) and to add a promotora/community leaders presentation on Sept. 10. The commission approved the amended draft and directed staff to forward it to the City Council for final approval of the annual work plan.
Commissioners made and seconded a motion to adopt the draft plan with amendments; the motion was carried in a roll-call vote. The recording officer read the votes during the meeting: Chair Zapata — Aye; Vice Chair Sakia — Aye; Commissioner Landa — Yes; Commissioner Terry — Yes; Commissioner Roosevelt — Yes; Commissioner Ziolkowski — Yes. The clerk announced the motion carried 6–0 with Commissioner Camacho absent.
Earlier in the meeting the commission also approved the minutes from the Sept. 11, 2025 meeting. The minutes approval passed in a roll-call vote later recorded as "The motion carries, 6 1 with commissioner Camacho absent." (See action records below for both recorded tallies.)
The adopted 2026 draft work plan schedules monthly commission meetings, a set of invited presentations (library and recreation services, neighborhood associations, county departments and community partners), two storytelling sessions for commissioners, program updates and required standing items such as an ADA website compliance update and a review of recommended budgets. The work plan document also identifies the February meeting for a consultant presentation on the citywide community needs assessment and schedules the commission’s annual recognition and recruitment tasks.
Commissioners discussed balancing informational presentations with opportunities for the commission to take action, and staff reiterated the distinction between the assessment process and standalone commission work: short-term commission actions remain possible even while the assessment is underway.
Formal approval of the draft work plan means staff will include the commission’s amended plan in its packet to the City Council for final adoption.
