Parents and community members used the Sept. 25 public-comment period to urge the Port Angeles School Board to support coach Casey Yulin after staff added a late resignation to the consent agenda earlier in the meeting and the board approved the consent agenda.
Several speakers described Yulin as a mentor who enforces standards and builds resilience. Ray Vera said Yulin “teaches accountability” and “work ethic,” and called for the district to give coaches the authority to make team decisions and for the board to back them. Another parent, Shane Abel, described the coach as a positive mentor who helped his son recover confidence following an injury and said he believed the coach was effectively forced to resign; the chair clarified in the meeting record that the district accepted the resignation that night.
Chelsea Williams and Rebecca Parker also spoke in support of the coach, recounting personal experiences in which Yulin reached out to injured or discouraged players and supported them beyond athletics. A letter from community member Kyle Ward, read for the record, asked the board to reflect on “what could have been done differently” to retain the coach and warned that talented coaches will be sought by other districts.
At the start of the meeting the board approved an amendment to the consent agenda to add a late resignation to the classified personnel action. The amendment was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote; the consent agenda itself was later moved, seconded and approved by voice vote. The chair later clarified that the district had accepted the coach’s resignation that evening. Speakers asked for greater transparency about the process and urged the district to support coaches in ways that preserve standards and student development.
Board members did not take further public action on the matter during the meeting; no additional personnel details were discussed in open session.
