The Federal Railroad Administration has canceled a series of California grants, including a $25 million safety grant that the Transbay Joint Powers Authority had planned to use on the portal project, Executive Director Ting told the San Francisco County Transportation Authority on Sept. 30.
‘‘The Federal Rail Administration has canceled a series of California grants including California high speed rail and a $25,000,000 safety grant project for the Transbay, joint powers authority portal project,’’ Director Ting said during the executive director’s report.
TJPA originally expected to use the grant to advance the track-and-systems contract for the portal, Director Ting said; project staff are working to identify alternative funding sources and to consider revising the sequencing of those contract packages. The grant had been awarded in late 2024, Director Ting added.
Why it matters: The Transbay joint project — a major regional rail and transit infrastructure effort — relied in part on federal grants for near-term contracting. The cancellation could change procurement sequencing and the schedule for portions of the portal contract; at the Sept. 30 meeting staff presented the change as information and did not request board action.
Board members did not take a formal vote or issue direction on the matter during the report. Staff said they are coordinating with TJPA to identify replacement funds and to assess the impacts to contract sequencing; no timeline for replacement funding was provided.
