The Kane County Administration Committee on Oct. 15 approved a resolution awarding a contract to Life Construction Incorporated to renovate the Adult Justice Center kitchen and laundry, citing extensive aging and failing infrastructure that staff said is impacting operations.
Kevin Harris, building manager, told the committee the renovation is urgent: "The bottom line is we have a huge amount of aging and failing infrastructure," and described corroded plumbing, leaking steam kettles, failing dishwashers and damaged doors and thresholds that require electrical, mechanical and plumbing work plus floor replacement.
Roger Fonstock noted the kitchen renovation is being coordinated with ARPA HVAC and ventilation upgrades so those systems are replaced together. The contract amount presented to the committee was $2,164,200. Staff said work would begin in December and could take roughly a year to complete; security and operations in the jail will be coordinated with corrections and the sheriff's office during construction.
In committee action, members moved and seconded the resolution to authorize the contract; roll call recorded affirmative votes and the motion passed. Staff said the project will proceed to architect and bid phases and that final scheduling and coordination will be handled with the sheriff's office and project managers. The contract language and full scope will be returned with any change orders.
