Mayor Gomez and the Tamarac City Commission reached consensus on Tuesday to adjust parts of the city’s 2026 meeting calendar after City Clerk Kimberly Dillon identified conflicts with religious holidays and official advocacy travel.
Dillon told commissioners the April 8, 2026 meeting overlaps with Passover observance and recommended moving that meeting from Wednesday, April 8 to Tuesday, April 7. She also recommended continuing the city’s practice of canceling the second November and December meetings because of Thanksgiving and the winter holiday season. The commission also agreed to change the January 28, 2026 morning meeting to 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2026, to reduce the chance the meeting will be affected by the Tallahassee advocacy trip.
“The purpose of this presentation this morning…is to share the 2026 commission meetings already identified as impacted by a religious holiday or other events,” City Clerk Kimberly Dillon said, asking the commission for consensus on the adjustments.
Dillon and staff noted the city traditionally cancels the second meeting in November and December, and that only one 2026 meeting currently conflicted with a recognized religious holiday: “This year, 1 meeting will be impacted by a religious holiday and that's the April 8 meeting, and it overlaps with the Passover that is, will be celebrated on April,” she said, recommending the April 7 date.
Commissioners discussed logistics and existing code constraints for meeting times. Dillon and city legal staff reiterated that the municipal code requires the first meeting of the month to be held at 7 p.m., restricting schedule changes to the second meeting of a month. “The code states are the first meeting must be held at 7PM. And so the time for that meeting cannot be changed,” Dillon said. Several commissioners suggested possible ordinance revisions to allow greater flexibility in future years, but no ordinance change was offered at the workshop.
After discussion, the commission recorded consensus to: cancel the second meetings scheduled for November and December 2026; reschedule the April 8, 2026 meeting to April 7, 2026; and change the January 28, 2026 meeting to 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2026, while staff will monitor Washington, D.C., advocacy trip dates for potential further changes.
The clerk said staff will follow up with additional information about the state and national advocacy schedules and return to the commission if further adjustments are required.
Minutes: staff will incorporate the changes into the published 2026 calendar and present any ordinance-change proposals about meeting-time flexibility separately for commission consideration.
