Two student council representatives updated the Abington Board of School Directors on recent activities at Abington Senior High School and Abington Middle School during the Oct. 14 meeting.
Lana (Elena) Brown, student council president at Abington Senior High School, told the board the senior high held a club and activities fair Oct. 7–8, five days of spirit-week activities leading into homecoming, a fall sports pep rally and a Pink Out football game to support breast cancer awareness. Brown listed the six finalists for homecoming king and queen and named the 2025–26 winners: Chase O’Brien and Alyssa Carranza. She also said the senior high hosted a well-attended homecoming dance and publicized an upcoming trunk-or-treat event on Oct. 17.
Brown highlighted academic and extracurricular achievements: 119 senior scholars were recognized by College Board programs; Ayla Mahmoud, class of 2026, qualified as a National Merit semifinalist; students were selected to serve on Congresswoman Dean’s Task Force; and junior Thriston Lundy won a division at the National Day of Chess tournament. She also reported multiple band and chorale competition placements, including first-place finishes in US Bands contests and captions for color guard and visual effect.
Noah Shannon, member of the Abington Middle School student council executive board, reported that AMS student council activities include recruiting sixth- and seventh-grade representatives and organizing a holiday food drive. He said the Reading Olympics has nearly 40 members, Teens Against Drugs and Alcohol (TADA) has roughly 800 members, and the Chess Club drew more than 80 sign-ups. Shannon also described the Builders Club’s activities supporting veterans and a UNICEF trunk-or-treat fundraising effort that raised $300 last year to benefit children in Zambia.
Board members thanked the students for their reports and asked that praise be passed on to staff and other students.
