Treasurer Paul Weisman asked the Boulder County Board of County Commissioners on Oct. 9 to restore a vacant position in the treasurer’s office that was eliminated earlier this year so the office can handle increasing foreclosures and train a successor before he leaves.
Weisman said he has “448 days” left in his tenure and that the office took over public-trustee duties without that position expecting he could manage the work. He told commissioners foreclosures in the county are up about 20% year-to-date and that properties proceeding “all the way to sale” have increased (19 so far this year, versus six last year), which creates more labor-intensive post-foreclosure work such as junior-lien resolution.
The treasurer said a staff member currently trained to back up trustee duties will be needed for senior deferrals during the tax season, and that the previously kept-vacant position should be refilled and trained in 2026. He estimated the position’s total cost including benefits at roughly $68,000 (Jillian Dietrich said staff would confirm the precise figure).
Weisman told the board the vacancy could be funded from trustee-related funds that ultimately revert to the general fund and said the office expects to hire someone in 2026 with sufficient time for hands-on training, possibly around August 2026.
Ending: Commissioners asked clarifying questions about timing and cost; no appropriation was approved at the Oct. 9 informational session.
