Public works staff told the Cranston City Council on Oct. 16 that work at Budlong Pool is moving forward on schedule with three components — the pool structure, the pump house and the pool house — and that contractors plan to place gunite on the pool bottom and walls at the end of the coming week, weather permitting.
Public works Director Correio said all reinforcing and forms are in place and inspected. The gunite pour is expected to take about three to five days to complete the floors and walls. After gunite, crews will add a small amount of water to stabilize the pool bottom, backfill around the pool and winterize piping to the pump house; flat work such as concrete patios will wait until spring.
The pump house is receiving conduit and a new concrete floor to replace an older wooden platform as electrical work is completed. The pool house interior is largely finished; remaining items include heating-system work and replacement mirrors. Fixtures such as toilets, sinks and the hot-water tank are installed and will be tested once water is brought into the building.
Officials said they hope the project will be stabilized for winter and that construction will resume in the spring as weather permits. The pool is expected to open the first week of July, the same target as in prior years.
Why it matters: Budlong Pool is a public recreation asset; the update sets expectations for seasonal progress and informs residents about timing for winterization and reopening.
Council action: none required — update only; staff will return with periodic progress reports.
