Public comment and a commissioner request on the Redondo Beach Planning Commission agenda prompted the commission to form a subcommittee and ask staff to help prepare a letter to City Council urging reconsideration of a North Redondo farmers market.
Longtime resident Jim Mueller urged the commission during public participation to advise council to pursue a Saturday morning farmers market on Artesia Boulevard, contrasting the city’s work on a paid survey about cannabis retail. "I urge the commission to advise the council and the city to look more seriously into establishing a Saturday morning farmer's market on Artesia," Mueller said, adding that a free citizen survey had shown positive support for a farmers market and suggesting a market could attract families and business to the commercial corridor.
Commissioner Doug Boswell and others pressed staff on options for speeding council consideration. Commissioners discussed options including drafting a formal letter from the commission, forming a subcommittee to draft the letter, or individual commissioners contacting council members. The commission voted to form a subcommittee and authorized the subcommittee to prepare a letter on behalf of the commission to forward to City Council; the motion carried by voice vote with all present saying "Aye." Commissioner Boswell and Commissioner Hazeltyne volunteered to help, and staff agreed to assist with text and to agendize the item for further commission confirmation at the next meeting if needed. The commission also discussed that funds cited by public comment (a reference to about $1,100,000 discussed by commenters) could be considered for market setup but no formal budget action was taken.
The commission recorded the direction as an action to prepare and forward a recommendation letter to City Council and to agendize the matter for follow-up. Staff advised that if commissioners want faster action, a subcommittee drafting a letter and coordinating with staff can expedite referral to council before the next meeting.
