The Saint John Economic Development Committee on Oct. 8 discussed final preparations for this year’s Chris Kringle Market, reporting a surge of vendor interest that exceeds the event’s current capacity and reviewing entertainment, promotion and logistics.

Committee members said the town received more than 100 vendor applications for roughly 50 available spots; the committee increased the vendor application fee from $50 to $100 to raise revenue for event activities. The market is planned for the town parking-lot location used last year and organizers said space limits the number of vendors this season.

The application surge means organizers will prioritize returning vendors in good standing and aim for a variety of offerings rather than duplicating product types, committee members said. Organizers are accepting payments as vendors are approved and are capping participation at about 50 vendors this year; the exact number will depend on layout and final approvals.

The committee also discussed entertainment and attractions. Santa was scheduled for a morning session (10 a.m.–noon) and organizers said they will seek performers to cover afternoon blocks roughly between noon and 4 p.m. Committee members noted weather may affect live musicians and that cost and availability have limited some character performers this year. "I don't think I can put it all together this year," Amy said of organizing a Small Business Saturday rollout; she suggested beginning planning in June next year to meet deadlines for billing inserts and other promotions.

Promotional plans include updating the event sign, producing a flyer and posting a Parks Department social event. Committee members said they will confirm whether the market is listed in the town's Christmas-in-the-Park materials. The committee also said it is coordinating with the clerk treasurer and town manager on distribution and details.

Separately, members noted the town’s amphitheater project moved to the bid phase; bids were opened for issuance and were due Nov. 12, the committee said. Members characterized construction timing as uncertain and said whether the amphitheater will provide additional space for future markets will depend on when construction begins and proceeds.
