Members of the Canaan Enrichment Foundation asked Jefferson County commissioners on Oct. 2 to consider funding assistance to preserve the Kramer House (known locally as the Indian Trails Building), a community landmark estimated to be more than 100 years old.
Cheryl, who identified herself as president of the Canaan Enrichment Foundation, told commissioners the building is structurally sound but needs exterior repairs, siding, porch removal and roof work. She said the foundation had received a $30,000 grant from the Community Foundation and had raised more than $5,000 locally in a few weeks, but the foundation estimates total repair costs at about $110,000 and requested that the county consider contributing up to $70,000.
"If we don't save it now, in 10 years, it will be too late," Cheryl said, describing the building’s community history as a store, restaurant and feed mill and urging preservation so future generations can continue to use the space.
Commissioners said they would look into county funding options and historic-preservation possibilities and asked staff to review available historic or capital funds. No formal motions or funding commitments were made at the meeting.
The foundation said it is pursuing landmark status and that community volunteers are prepared to help with work if funding is available.
