Sunbury — City council on Oct. 1 adopted a proclamation declaring October 2025 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Sunbury and recognized local volunteer and survivor Jessica Chudlin of the American Cancer Society.
Chudlin, who identified herself as a 13-year breast cancer survivor and an American Cancer Society volunteer, thanked the council and said community support saves lives. “I know firsthand the fear and uncertainty that come with hearing the words you have cancer, but I also know the incredible power of community support and hope,” Chudlin said.
Vice President John Grumney read the proclamation, which summarized national statistics and urged residents to pursue early-detection strategies; the proclamation noted that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and that early-detection strategies have substantially improved five-year survival rates.
What happens next: The city will observe the proclamation and the American Cancer Society volunteer accepted the recognition; no further council action was recorded.
