The Lockport City Council approved a multi-year contract to acquire 41 Axon Taser 10 devices and related training and software, with the department proposing payment from federal asset forfeiture funds.
The police chief told the council the department’s current Taser 7 devices, purchased in 2020, are at the end of their five-year usable life and warranty period; the Taser 10 package includes training devices, software, virtual-reality scenario training and integration with the department’s body cameras so that deployments are recorded.
The police chief described the Taser 10 as a “10‑shot” device with an effective range of about 44–45 feet — longer than current devices — and said the new device cycles its probes one at a time until connectivity is achieved. A department representative said the device’s output is lower than older models (about under 1,000 volts compared with roughly 5,000 volts cited for older technology).
The contract’s initial payment and subsequent annual payments were presented in the staff materials; the chief said the package’s costs will be covered by federal forfeiture funds. Council approved the purchase during the consent vote.
Staff said the purchase includes instructor training and that a newly hired officer is already certified as an instructor; staff will arrange internal training for other officers using included training resources.
