The Flagstaff Sustainability Commission on Sept. 25 voted to accept the version of a proposed sustainability commission ordinance prepared by the city's legal division and asked staff to send it to City Council. "Draft 2…is the version approved by the city's legal division," staff member Jenna said while outlining options for commissioners.
That decision matters because the ordinance, if considered and adopted by City Council, would codify the commission's duties and formalize its role within city governance. Jenna told commissioners the group could either approve the legal version for referral to council, make additional edits during the meeting, or reconvene a working group to revise the language further. "Option 1 is to approve the second draft, which is the one from legal," she said.
After deliberation, a commissioner moved to approve the legal version, a second was made, and the motion passed. The commission chair confirmed the motion "passes" and said staff would forward the approved draft to counsel for consideration and possible adoption in October or November. The meeting record does not show a roll‑call tally of individual votes.
Commissioners noted one member who had previously raised concerns was absent from the meeting; the chair said she was comfortable moving the legal department's version forward. The commission took a formal vote to approve the legal department's draft; no amendments were adopted at the Sept. 25 meeting.
