Staff from the Flagstaff Sustainability Office reviewed the office's August monthly report on Sept. 25, highlighted upcoming City Council items and the commission set a combined November/December meeting date of Nov. 20. "On Tuesday, October 7, we have two things… the agreement for a virtual power purchase agreement" and a micromobility share item, a staff member told commissioners while walking through the council calendar.
The update matters because several sustainability initiatives will be considered by City Council in October and November and because the commission must schedule time to grade sustainability grant applications in November. Staff noted a special City Council meeting on Thursday, Oct. 9 for consideration of the regional plan and said the regional plan could go to voters if council adopts it. The staff update also flagged a council item on Oct. 21 for an APS energy efficiency rebate presentation.
The commission discussed combining the November and December meetings because the November meeting normally falls the week of Thanksgiving. Commissioners voted to hold a combined Nov. 20 meeting, and the chair said the meeting might be scheduled for up to three hours to allow grading of sustainability grants and other business. A motion to set Nov. 20 as the combined meeting passed with affirmative voice votes; a roll‑call tally was not recorded in the transcript.
Staff also highlighted program items in the monthly report: a carbon neutrality plan outreach series (open houses), a cleanup that removed 375 pounds of invasive plant species, a climate resilience project and the conclusion of a youth climate action VISTA position. Staff said they would circulate links to the regional plan public hearing draft and to the monthly report. The commission did not take votes on the council items during the Sept. 25 meeting; staff encouraged commissioners to attend council meetings for items of interest.
