The Hempstead Town Board meeting held on September 30, 2025, featured significant concerns from local residents regarding a new development project in Valley Stream. The president of the Millbrook Civic Association addressed the board, highlighting the community's apprehensions about the construction of much larger homes that would double the existing square footage.
Residents are particularly worried about the loss of greenery, as the development is set to replace grass and trees with concrete and pavers. This change raises concerns about the community's infrastructure, specifically regarding water runoff and drainage issues. The speaker emphasized that the area, once known for its greenery, is at risk of becoming overly developed, which could lead to increased flooding.
Additionally, the community is facing challenges related to parking availability. The construction is expected to reduce parking options for residents, particularly near local schools, where teachers currently struggle to find parking during school hours.
The speaker also raised concerns about the potential for the new homes to be used for multiple families, which could impact local schools and community resources. He noted that the homes are being expanded from approximately 1,100 to 3,000 square feet, prompting fears of overcrowding.
To support their concerns, the Millbrook Civic Association presented a petition with nearly 200 signatures from residents opposing the development. The board members expressed their willingness to review the petition and accompanying photographs of the area.
The meeting underscored the community's desire for careful oversight of the development process to ensure that the character of Valley Stream is preserved and that infrastructure concerns are adequately addressed.
