The Waxahachie Independent School District (WISD) held its Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) meeting on October 2, 2025, focusing on student support initiatives and safety updates. The meeting began with Jessica Wilkerson discussing her role in facilitating connections between students and positive adult figures, particularly for those transitioning from the Disciplinary Alternative Education Program (DAEP) or Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program (JJAEP). Wilkerson emphasized the importance of addressing students' basic needs and fostering family connections to enhance their educational experience. She reported that she has already served approximately 65 families through counselor referrals and the McKinney-Vento program, highlighting the ongoing efforts to support students facing challenges.
Following Wilkerson's presentation, Lisa Bridal Huber, the safety and security coordinator for WISD, provided an update on the district's security measures. She reported a transition from the emergency response app "Duress" to "AJIX," noting that initial issues have been resolved and the system is now functioning effectively. Huber also mentioned the upcoming implementation of canine visits to secondary campuses, which will occur twice a month on random days to enhance security. She confirmed that the district is fully staffed and continues to utilize the anonymous tip reporting system, "Tip 4 1 1," while exploring potential partnerships with local resources for further support.
The meeting concluded with a health update from Melissa, who noted a positive start to the school year despite some logistical challenges, such as lunch service. Overall, the SHAC meeting underscored WISD's commitment to student well-being and safety, with ongoing initiatives aimed at bridging gaps in support and enhancing the educational environment for all students.
