Surry County has received recognition for its innovative approach to public service with an Achievement Award from the Virginia Association of Counties (VAECO). This award highlights the county's commitment to enhancing community services, particularly through its 55 Plus Initiative, which caters to residents aged 55 and older.
During the recent Board of Supervisors meeting, Gage Harder from VAECO presented the award, noting that Surry County was one of only 57 winners selected from 155 entries this year. This marks the county's second Achievement Award, following a previous win in 2022 for its shared building services program with Sussex County.
The 55 Plus Initiative is a collaborative effort involving the Department of Social Services, Parks and Recreation, and Youth and Family Resources. It aims to provide a variety of events and programs designed to enrich the lives of older adults in Surry County. This initiative not only enhances the quality of life for seniors but also showcases the effectiveness of interdepartmental partnerships in addressing the needs of the community.
The program has been well-received, with many residents familiar with its offerings. The collaboration among departments has created a more vibrant and supportive environment for older adults, demonstrating Surry County's dedication to fostering an age-friendly community.
As the county continues to develop programs that meet the needs of its residents, the recognition from VAECO serves as a testament to the positive impact of these initiatives on the local community.
