In the heart of Surry County, the Board of Supervisors convened to discuss the progress and challenges faced by the county's maintenance department during the recent quarter. The maintenance report revealed that from July 1 to September 29, 2025, the department received 123 work orders from the public, successfully completing 107 of them. Additionally, the team generated 153 work orders internally, achieving an impressive overall completion rate of 94.2%. This efficiency reflects a dedicated effort to address the community's needs, particularly in areas such as ditching and pothole repairs.

Among the highlights of the quarter, the maintenance team completed significant ditching work along Route 31, ensuring safer travel for residents. They also tackled pothole patching on Routes 636, 561, and 10 East, demonstrating a proactive approach to road safety. With the school year beginning, the team prioritized visibility at intersections, conducting slope mowing and litter pickup to enhance safety for students and drivers alike.

As winter approaches, preparations are underway for the "dry run," a crucial exercise to ensure that snow removal equipment is ready for the season. This involves testing plows, spreaders, and brine equipment, as well as reviewing snow plans and routes with contractors. The meticulous planning aims to ensure that the county is well-equipped to handle winter weather challenges.

Looking ahead, the maintenance department has ambitious plans for additional ditching on Route 10 West, funded through a separate source. This project will involve lane closures as hired equipment works to clear ditches and pipes, ensuring proper drainage and sediment control. The community can expect to see increased activity on the roads over the next few months as these essential improvements take shape.

In a collaborative effort, the county is also working with AES Solar to address roadway cracking and improve safety at the intersection of Routes 617 and 626. The partnership aims to enhance travel safety and maintain the integrity of the county's roadways.
