October has been officially proclaimed Domestic Violence Awareness Month in South Padre Island, highlighting the urgent need for community awareness and support for victims. The proclamation aims to educate the public about the signs of domestic violence and encourage collective efforts to prevent and respond to such incidents.
Sandy Perez from Friendship for Women, a local agency serving survivors since 1977, expressed gratitude for the proclamation during the city council meeting. "We serve women, children, and men, providing shelter, counseling, and legal assistance," she stated, emphasizing the importance of community support in helping survivors rebuild their lives.
Friendship for Women operates a 24-hour hotline and accepts donations to assist those in need, particularly for individuals who may leave their homes in crisis without essential items. The hotline number is (956) 544-7412, and they also maintain a presence on social media to reach out to the community.
This proclamation not only raises awareness but also reinforces the commitment to creating a safe environment where everyone can live with dignity and security. As the month unfolds, the city encourages residents to engage in discussions and activities that support survivors and promote a culture of respect and safety.
