Coronado High School students are taking proactive steps toward civic engagement as they participate in high school voter education weeks. During September, members of the yearbook and broadcasting staff learned about the preregistration process for voting, an initiative aimed at equipping young Californians with the knowledge they need to prepare for future elections.
Students aged 16 and 17 can preregister to vote through the California Secretary of State's website, registertovote.ca.gov. This process allows them to automatically be registered when they turn 18, ensuring they are ready to participate in elections without any last-minute hurdles. Once registered, they will receive a card confirming their registration and details about where to vote.
The preregistration initiative not only simplifies the voting process for young voters but also encourages them to think ahead about their civic responsibilities. Students are urged to take advantage of this opportunity and ensure they are prepared when they reach voting age.
In addition to the preregistration efforts, it is important for those who are already 18 to check their registration status before the upcoming special election on November 4. The deadline to register for this election is October 20, emphasizing the need for timely action to ensure participation in the democratic process.
As Coronado High School fosters a culture of civic engagement, students are encouraged to embrace their roles as informed voters, paving the way for a more active and engaged community.
