In a recent Planning Commission meeting held in Derby, Kansas, city officials discussed an exciting new development: a proposed restaurant featuring a drive-through facility, with no interior seating but outdoor patio space. This establishment, an Andy's Frozen Custard, is set to join the growing list of similar locations across the metropolitan area.
The site, located in a B3 general business district, has already undergone a lot split, dividing a larger parcel into two. Another split was approved just last week, paving the way for further development in the area. However, the project faces some challenges, particularly concerning the Southern Star Central Gas Pipeline Company. Recent interpretations of easement boundaries have complicated the site plans, requiring adjustments to avoid encroachments.
The proposed restaurant aims to exceed the city’s requirements with 14 stacking spaces for drive-through customers, significantly more than the five required. The design includes several pre-order boards and a larger menu board, with plans for staff to assist customers during busy times, similar to practices seen at popular chains like Dutch Bros and Chick-fil-A.
The building's design features a brick facade with glass elements and a distinctive canopy structure, aiming to stand out from other establishments in the area. The Planning Commission will need to evaluate the aesthetics of the building, particularly the north facade, which has been enhanced with additional brick details to create visual interest.
After thorough discussion, the commission unanimously approved the site plans, including the proposed signage and design elements, signaling a positive step forward for this new addition to Derby’s dining landscape. As the community anticipates the arrival of Andy's Frozen Custard, the meeting underscored the ongoing development and growth within the city, promising to enhance local dining options for residents and visitors alike.
