At the recent City of Champaign Township meeting, the urgent need for a low barrier shelter took center stage, as community leaders rallied for enhanced support in addressing homelessness. Katie Harmon, coordinator of the continuum of service providers to the homeless, emphasized the critical role such a shelter plays in public health and safety.
During the meeting, Harmon revealed that the executive committee of the continuum has officially endorsed a low barrier shelter, highlighting its importance in the community. The committee has formed a dedicated group to assist the City of Champaign Township, which currently operates the shelter, in its revisioning and rebuilding efforts over the next six months. This initiative includes a financial stabilization plan and a strategy for monthly reporting to ensure accountability and progress.
Harmon noted that if the benchmarks set in the rebuilding plan are not met, the committee is prepared to initiate a request for proposals (RFP) to find a new operator for the shelter, demonstrating their commitment to maintaining essential services for the homeless population.
Beverly Baker, chief impact officer for United Way of Champaign County, echoed Harmon’s sentiments, stressing the significant community concerns surrounding the need for a low barrier shelter. The discussions at the meeting underscored a collective commitment to tackling homelessness in Champaign County, with leaders actively seeking solutions and collaboration to ensure the shelter's success.
