During a recent meeting of the Maui County Budget, Finance, and Economic Development Committee, members discussed pressing issues related to water management and energy costs, particularly in the context of the Cooler Agricultural Park project.
Member Cook raised concerns about the ongoing challenge of pumping costs, suggesting the potential for a solar field to help offset electricity expenses. The committee acknowledged that while solar energy was not initially considered in the project’s planning, they are open to revisiting this option. The discussion highlighted the need for sustainable solutions to manage operational costs effectively.
Another key topic was the design and functionality of the reservoir intended for the agricultural park. Questions were raised about its capacity and regular usage, with members considering whether alternative solutions, such as water tanks, could provide additional benefits for irrigation. However, it was noted that reservoirs generally hold more water than tanks, making them a more viable option for the project’s needs.
As the meeting progressed, the committee moved towards a vote on two bills related to the project. With no further questions from members, the committee unanimously recommended the passage of the bills, signaling a step forward in addressing the community's agricultural and water management needs.
This meeting underscored the committee's commitment to exploring innovative solutions to enhance resource management in Maui County, reflecting a proactive approach to community challenges.
