A local business owner, Pat Booker of Belladonna and Company, delivered a passionate address at the Live Oak City Council meeting, calling for accountability from city officials over what he described as "torturous interference" with his business operations. Booker revealed that his small business faced significant delays due to a cited safety issue, which he claims was misrepresented by city officials.
After nearly two months of waiting, he was informed that a costly $30,000 meter conversion was necessary to address the safety concerns. However, upon further investigation, Booker discovered that the solution was actually free—simply marking meters and labeling breakers. He accused city officials of abusing their power and prioritizing their image over the welfare of local businesses, which he argued could have contributed to tax revenue and job creation for the city.
Booker emphasized the need for accountability, stating, "We pay your salaries and because of this we have a right to expect the highest standard of conduct." He expressed frustration over the lack of communication and support from the city, which he believes has created distrust between officials and local businesses.
In closing, he urged the council to reconsider their approach to small business owners, advocating for a cultural shift within the administration to foster collaboration rather than opposition. His remarks highlighted the critical relationship between local government and the business community, underscoring the need for transparency and integrity in public service.
