Multnomah County Board Approves $130K Increase for Sellwood Library Refresh Project

Multnomah County officials have approved an increase in funding for the Sellwood Library refresh project, allocating an additional $130,933.11 to enhance the facility. This decision, made during the regular meeting on September 4, 2025, aims to improve library services and create a more welcoming environment for patrons.

The funding increase is necessary due to added project scope, which includes upgraded lighting and the replacement of the library's storefront door, both of which are essential for maintaining a safe and modern space. This project is part of a broader initiative funded by the Liberty Capital Bond, which was approved by voters in 2020 to support library renovations and expansions across the county.

Heidi Leibrant, the procurement and contracting manager for the Department of County Assets, emphasized that this refresh is the tenth of eleven planned updates under the bond program. The enhancements are designed to ensure that libraries can adapt to system-wide changes while providing efficient and inviting spaces for the community.

During the meeting, public testimony highlighted concerns about the governance of library services and the effectiveness of the advisory boards overseeing the bond program. Charles Johnson, a community member, expressed the need for clearer representation and accountability within these bodies, suggesting that a more democratic approach could enhance community engagement and oversight.
